Minecraft Gets Biggest Console Update Yet

by Jeff Cork on Dec 18, 2015 at 03:52 AM

The worlds in Minecraft are getting bigger and richer today, thanks to an update to the game's Console Edition. PlayStation and Xbox players can explore new biomes, including redwood forests and mesas, and interact with a variety of new creatures, items, and more.

Mojang is calling the download, which brings the game up to version 1.8.8, its biggest one yet. As you might guess, that means that there is a wall of accompanying patch notes. Here are some of the highlights:

  • New biomes, including mesa, mega taiga, roofed forest, birch forest, forest, savanna, extreme hills+, deep ocean, and snowless taiga
  • New mobs, including endermite, guardian, elder guardian, rabbit, and chicken jockey
  • New blocks, including granite, packed ice, red sandstone, diorite, prismarine, and many more
  • Treasure can be caught while fishing
  • Buttons can be placed on the tops and bottoms of blocks
  • Skeletons flee from wolves
  • Spiders no longer see through solid blocks

Those are just a few of the new things in Minecraft: Console Edition. For a complete look at the changes, visit Mojang's site

Our Take
It's nice to see all this new stuff in the game, but I can't help but feel bad for people who just invested in the Wii U version. That one is running at 1.6.4, and these changes don't apply. Here's hoping parity between all platforms is on the way.
