Bayonetta Is Joining The Super Smash Bros. Roster

by Tim Turi on Dec 15, 2015 at 10:27 AM

Video games' most-popular witch is joining Super Smash Bros. Today during a Smash-centric Nintendo Direct, Nintendo revealed that Bayonetta, the titular heroine of Platinum Games' stylish action series will be available as DLC for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS next year.

Bayonetta leaps into Smash Bros. shoe-guns a-blazing, brandishing her short-haired look from Wii U-exclusive Bayonetta 2 (her long-haired look is also available). According to Nintendo, Bayonetta was the number one dream character in fan-generated Smash Bros. polls in Europe, and in the top five for the U.S. Nintendo clarified that Bayonetta satisfied two criteria: She was highly requested and was also a realistic option for business negotiations.

The Umbra Witch comes to Smash with few concessions made to her diverse, demanding moveset. Bayonetta can unleash a multitude of combos, summon gigantic, hair fists and feet to pummel her opponents, and even engage Witch Time with well-timed dodges. Only players who were dodged will be slowed by Witch Time, and the higher their damage the longer the effect. Don't worry about Bayonetta players spamming the ability, though, because repeated use decreases its duration.

Bayonetta also brings her deadly Bullet Arts to the battlefield, with the ability to end any attack with a blast from her four firearms. The range and versatility of these guns also allows her to deliver parting shots to opponents being flung to their doom by other players, effectively stealing their kill.

Her Final Smash is the Infernal Climax, which summons a gigantic hair demon that looms over the battlefield, hungrily waiting to chew on Bayonetta's rivals. Players can use Bayonetta's ability to juggle enemies in mid-air to launch other players up into the follicular abomination's maw, who will proceed to chew up the competition.

Bayonetta comes with a new stage: The Umbra Clocktower. Fans will remember this insane backdrop from the introduction of Bayonetta. Chunks of buildings soar through space-time as players duke it out, complete with violent, porcelain-faced angels looming in the background.

Smash Bros. fans can get Bayonetta for $5.99 individually on each Wii U and 3DS next February. A bundle deal for both platforms will be available for $6.99.
