Psychonauts 2 Is A Third Of The Way Funded In Under A Day

by Andrew Reiner on Dec 04, 2015 at 07:11 AM

Fans have been waiting over 10 years for a Psychonauts sequel, and it appears they won't be waiting too much longer. Double Fine Productions' crowdfunded campaign for Psychonauts 2 eclipsed $1 million of its $3.3 million goal in under 15 hours from over 8,000 people. With 34 days remaining in the campaign, and backers continuing to fly in, the odds of Psychonauts 2 become a reality are looking better with each passing minute.

Double Fine has found great success in game crowdfunding, and is one of the most successful game developers to rely on fans for support. Double Fine's Broken Age Kickstarter campaign crushed its $400,000 goal with over $3.3 million raised, and Massive Chalice raised over $1.2 million, but needed just $725,000.

Psychonauts 2 is different than the previous Kickstarters not just because of the change in venue to Fig. This is the first major video game crowdfunding effort to allow non-accredited investors to earn a return on their contribution.

Our Take
Getting excited over a new game announcement only to learn that it will only happen through a crowdfunding campaign can be frustrating. If you're looking forward to Psychnoauts 2, all signs at the moment point to the game reaching its funding goals. That still doesn't mean the game is a lock for release however. Game development is challenging and many game campaigns – Broken Age included – required additional funding before they could be completed.
