Report: Dark Cloud On the Way For PlayStation 4 PS2 Emulation

by Mike Futter on Dec 03, 2015 at 01:01 PM

Sony appears to have accidentally revealed one of its surprises for The Game Awards or PSX. We recently learned that PlayStation 2 emulation is coming to PlayStation 4. It seems that Dark Cloud is going to be one of the first games announced for that program.

Sony reportedly published (and then quickly removed) information about the game. The description, captured by Twitter user Bradzaking (and shared again by Wario64), indicates that these are not PS2 Classics that were playable on PS3. The service also won’t be compatible with your library of disc-based games.

“PS2 Classics and PS2-formatted discs are incompatible with the PS4 system,” reads the description. Dark Cloud will be running at 1080p via up-rendering, support trophies, and utilize share play and remote play.

A still image that served as the thumbnail for the video is all that remains. We’ll update as soon as Sony reveals information when it actually intends to.

Our Take
Dark Cloud is a great start to the program, but this leak is going to cause some problems. The emulation program doesn’t work with any PS2 classics you might have purchased last gen. It doesn’t work with your discs. Getting the information out clearly about pricing and mechanism are going to be important.

It's likely that Dark Cloud is only one of a number of first wave games coming for emulation. I can't wait to see what else is included, provided the price is right.
