Nintendo’s New Account System Live In Japan

by Mike Futter on Nov 30, 2015 at 10:55 PM

Nintendo has launched registrations for its new account system in Japan. The service will eventually be available worldwide, though a Western rollout has not been announced.

The service was detailed at a Nintendo investor briefing in late October. My Nintendo will link to existing Nintendo IDs, as well as social media accounts, support online purchases for Wii U and 3DS (and presumably NX in the future), and offer a new point system that replaces the dearly departed Club Nintendo.

Users’ Nintendo Accounts will also connect console and mobile purchases, link smartphone experiences (like the upcoming Miitomo) to other games, and eventually serve as a portal to discounts at theme parks and retail outlets.

We’ll update as more information is available on release outside Japan.

Our Take
Early reports indicated that the wave of sign-ups for Nintendo Accounts hampered the system. That seems to be resolved for now, though it seems likely Nintendo is testing this out at home before rolling out the system elsewhere. Hopefully, infrastructure is in place to support the inevitable flood of registrations.
