Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma has been removed from PlayStation Store, Xbox Marketplace, and Steam following significantly poor reception. The developer also is planning to release refunds to buyers.

In an interview with CGMagazine, developer Versus Evil explained the decision to halt plans for a second and third volume.

“The game was a failure,” said Versus Evil General Manager Steve Escalante. “We could not do, in good conscience, volume 2 and volume 3. So we’ve begun the process, it’s been a long process to figure it out because Sony has never really had to do this in this way, but we’re returning all the money. So across the board we’re putting out an apology saying ‘sorry about this.’”

Escalante added that Versus Evil didn’t perceive any game-breaking bugs or issues, contributing the failure to people’s dislike of the game.

Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma, based on the 1999 manga and Spike TV series of the same name, tells the story of Afro’s former friend and his hunt for revenge. The game released earlier this year to massive criticism, garnering a score of 21 on Metacritic and Steam user reviews scoring in at three percent.

Our Take
While a poorly developed game is enough for some customers to be wary of a company's projects, it's good to see Versus Evil own up to its mistakes and do right by their customers. Hopefully this was a good lesson for the studio, and not too many Afro Samurai fans were put out.
