Rainbow Six Siege DLC Operators Can Be Purchased With In-Game Currency

by Mike Futter on Nov 05, 2015 at 05:23 AM

Ubisoft has detailed the post-launch plans for next month’s Rainbow Six Siege. The publisher plans to add a eight new operators and four new maps divided evenly over four “seasons” scheduled throughout 2016.

All of the additional maps and the new modes planned will be free to all players. There are also new weapons and seasonal events planned. However, players will be able to pay for the new operators (600 R6 credits, or $4.99 if purchased in the smallest bundle) and approximately one-third of the weapon skins.

Operators can also be unlocked for 25,000 in-game credits (called Renown). Ubisoft says this represents approximately 25 hours of play. Comparatively, the 20 operators that come with the base game cost no more than 2,000 Renown (starting at 500 for the first one in each counter-terrorist unit and stepping up by 500 for each additional one).

Players will earn an estimated 1,000 Renown per hour, with daily challenges helping to boost that. You’ll also be able to purchase Renown boosters with R6 Credits that temporarily increase how much you earn.

Skins come in five different tiers. The lowest tier can only be purchased with Renown. Tiers two and three can either be acquired with Renown or R6 credits. The top two tiers are exclusively unlocked by R6 Credits.

New content will be rolling out through December 2016. Rainbow Six Siege is due out on December 1 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Our Take
This seems like a fair way to approach add-on content, especially as it borrows from League of Legends model. Die-hard players will be able to unlock the new characters without spending anything just through play. It’ll take a while, but for those that have already unlocked everything by that point, they might have a cache of Renown ready to spend.
