News

Earlier today, Nintendo reported its half-year financial performance and updated software sales data. Tomorrow should bring additional information about a hotly anticipated strategic move.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Nintendo will be announcing new details about its upcoming mobile game lineup. The company struck a deal with developer DeNA in March to bring a number of original games to smart devices.

In May, Nintendo pegged the number of anticipated releases at five through March 31, 2017. The first of these could arrive before the end of the calendar year.

Nintendo will be holding an investor briefing tomorrow. This would be a logical venue to introduce new information, though that might not be the specific game announcement fans are hoping for.

Our Take
Nintendo’s smartphone endeavors are an enormous opportunity for a company that has seen its handheld market slowly erode. I’m eager to see how the company approaches the segment and how it navigates a balance between a corporate culture of quality and a usership that gravitates toward “fast and cheap.”
