Destiny Dumps Elemental Effects On Legendary Primary Weapons

by Mike Futter on Oct 23, 2015 at 11:38 AM

If you’ve been running the King’s Fall raid, you might have noticed that your primary weapons don’t have elemental affinity. That’s by design, it seems.

According to Bungie designer Luke Smith, you won’t be seeing arc, solar, or void damage on primary legendary weapons anymore. He responded to a comment on NeoGAF explaining the decision.

“Elemental primaries are being left behind,” he writes. “They had the distinct and undesirable property of limiting a broad weapon sandbox to a few weapons. You're free to disagree, but I strongly prefer the breadth of arsenal options, the potential of finding a better Legendary than you have to being stuck because of a damage color. Additionally, no Legendary weapons with damage colors has the property of making secondaries and heavies more important because of their damage color.”

So there you have it. Those rewards from the hard mode raid are functioning as expected. Now you’ll just need to get creative with your secondary and heavy weapon when it comes to dishing out color damage.

Our Take
This decision is going to sting, especially for those that fell in love with weapons like Atheon’s Epilogue in Destiny’s early days. However, the logic here is sound, and giving people more flexibility in the primary slot broadens the arsenal options.
