Bungie Addresses Destiny Shadowshot Exploit, Delays Return Of Trials

by Matt Miller on Oct 15, 2015 at 01:36 PM

The last 24 hours have revealed a devastating cheat/exploit on offer in Destiny, which allows the Hunter class to deploy effectively infinite supers in battle. While that breaks the PvE game, it’s an even bigger deal for the PvP game, in which an exploiting player can ruin everyone’s fun. In acknowledgment of that problem, Bungie appears to be delaying the return of Trials of Osiris, according to its latest weekly update. But it’s not all bad news, as the date for hard mode on the raid has been moved up.

Originally, Trials of Osiris was set to return tomorrow, October 16. The highly competitive game mode would have run through the weekend, but in light of the Shadowshot exploit, Bungie has stated that it plans to delay Brother Vance’s return until a solution has been found. Unfortunately, the update stops short of addressing how the infinite super issue may affect Iron Banner in the coming days, as that event has been running all week and will continue until the Tuesday morning reset.

On the brighter side, the raid team seems to have finalized its work on hard mode for the King’s Fall raid. Rather than wait for the originally planned launch date of October 30, hard mode will now launch on October 23 at 10am Pacific. No word yet on exactly what will make hard mode so much more difficult, but previous experience suggests that you had better know the base raid like the back of your hand if you want a chance at success. And while we don't know the specifics of the rewards, Bungie did offer one pretty fascinating hint: the loot will go all the way up to a light value of 320. Currently, the highest available light value in the game is 310.

Other lingering questions for the Destiny community are also addressed in this week’s update. Bungie is analyzing data about theTitan Sunbreaker class, presumably because so many players have found the subclass’ super to be overpowered in PvP. The team is also working on improvements to Nightfall rewards. The update also attempts to put to rest rumors (gleaned from datamining) that the new microtransactions might introduce buffs to raid rates; according to the update, this data was the remnant of when moldering shards and three of coins were considered for use in Tess’ Eververse store, but Bungie ultimately opted against that plan. Finally, recent changes to the economy of strange coins and weapon parts have upset some players, and the team is continuing to work on the issue.

Our Take
As a Destiny player who has been enjoying Iron Banner this week, and was looking forward to Trials of Osiris, the news about the Shadowshot exploit really hurt. I hope to log on this evening and try some matches out, but if the exploit is being used in abundance, I’ll likely head off to do something else in the game that relies less on the good will of highly competitive game players in pursuit of a tangible reward.
