Allison Road Developer Cancels Kickstarter, Joins Worms Developer's Indie Label

by Joseph Knoop on Oct 12, 2015 at 08:11 AM

In a statement made today on its Kickstarter page, Allison Road developer Lilith Ltd announced that the popular indie horror game and "P.T. spiritual successor" is canceling its Kickstarter campaign in favor of a new partnership with publisher Team17. The publisher is most widely known as the developer behind the Worms franchise, and publisher of games like the recent Beyond Eyes and The Escapists series.

The Allison Road team will continue to work under Team17’s indie label program, which provides professional resources and marketing materials to indie developers. These resources include QA testing, development team support, and social media management among others.

“For us it’s an incredible opportunity to be part of a label that looks after not only such a massive gaming franchise, but also supports developers like Playtonic, Mouldy Toof, and many others,” the developer said in their most recent Kickstarter update. “Working with Team17 will give us the chance to make our game unhindered creatively, but at the same time will give us the resources, support, and experience that only a 25 year-old studio can give.”

No money should be withdrawn from the bank accounts of Allison Road’s Kickstarter supporters (Kickstarter does not withdraw funds until the end of the campaign, and only if the project has reached its goal), but the developer states that it will look for ways to involve supporters in the game at a later date.

Developer Lilith also recently released new concept art of a marshy forest environment, a stark contrast to the mostly indoor environment seen in previous trailers.

Our Take
It's always disheartening to hear of a popular Kickstarter campaign being canceled, but Team17's track record as an indie publisher bodes well for a beneficial relationship, if you go by developer statements posted on their site. It does seem that Allison Road will be Team17's riskiest venture yet, though, considering the game's seemingly higher production values than previously published indie games. Fans ultimately want this game to come out of the gate running, and Team17's resources can only benefit the small team of six developers behind it.
