[UPDATE] Hasbro Announces Transformers 'Prime Wars' Trilogy Across Toys, Comics, And Video Games

by Brian Shea on Oct 09, 2015 at 06:54 AM

Update: An Activision spokesperson has provided us with the following statement regarding this news:

Activision’s Transformers: Devastation console title presents a game specific prequel story that dovetails with the expanded Combiner War story arc told in the IDW comic book series.  As the Transformers story and franchise continue to evolve, Activision will continue to collaborate closely with Hasbro in exploring where to take the Transformers video game franchise beyond this week’s much anticipated release of Transformers: Devastation.

Original Story:

According to an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter, toy manufacturer Hasbro has announced that the Transformers brand will be bringing its comics, toys, and video games into a single trilogy of narratives entitled "Prime Wars." The first event in the trilogy, Combiner Wars, is currently underway in both the toy and comic universes, but no video game has been explicitly defined as a piece of the Combiner Wars arc to this point.

Following the conclusion of the Combiner Wars sometime in summer 2016, the Transformers brand will move on to Titan Returns, the second part of the Prime Wars narrative. The Titan Returns storyline is set to welcome back Sentinel Prime, a fan-favorite character, along with the massive Titans. In addition, Titan Returns will bring back robots that combine to form the heads of even bigger robots – a  nod to the classic Headmasters storyline. The third chapter of this trilogy has not yet been named, but according the the report, the trilogy is set to conclude sometime in late 2017 or early 2018.

The most recent video game release under the Transformers brand, Transformers Devastation, released on Tuesday. While the game does feature Combiners in it, the game has not been officially deemed a part of the overarching Combiner Wars arc. We've reached out to Activision for comment regarding this news and will update this story if we hear back.

Our Take
This move represents an attempt by the Transformers brand to unite its multiple media arms into one cohesive storyline. While it sounds like the movie universe is staying separate from comics, toys, and video games, this could be a very exciting turn of events for Transformers fans.
