Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom Comes To iOS, Features Apple Watch Companion App

by Joseph Knoop on Oct 08, 2015 at 11:17 AM

A sequel to 2013’s popular Sonic the Hedgehog endless runner game Sonic Dash released today on iOS devices. A new add-on includes the ability to earn bonuses through exercise using an Apple Watch companion app.

Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom features the cast of the children’s animated show and game series of the same name, including Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, and Sticks the Badger. Players can select three characters to use during gameplay and swap them in and out to utilize their special abilities for higher scores. Also new to the sequel are collectible sprites, which can be combined and equipped to a player’s team in order to multiply scores or extend special abilities. There are 45 sprites currently available to collect.

Perhaps the most notable addition to the series is a companion app for Apple Watch that lets players earn additional rings and sprites for racking up miles on a Sonic-themed pedometer. The companion app is exclusive to the iOS platform, so no bonus for Android users when the game releases widely across Android devices on October 15.

Check out the trailer for a look at the game at full speed.

Our Take
The original Sonic Dash received some solid praise back in 2013, but it's weird to see Sega take a deeper plunge into the Sonic Boom universe after the game received near-universal negative reception and the 3DS sequel got delayed into next year.
