Reader Discussion: Let’s Talk About Voice Acting

by Mike Futter on Sep 25, 2015 at 11:13 AM

This week’s biggest topic has been the potential voice actor strike. If you’re not up to speed on the situation, we have a handy explainer for you. But that’s not exactly what we want to discuss today.

Set aside your personal feelings about what the union wants or what the publishers are allegedly demanding (remember, we don’t have any direct comment from the employer side). Let’s chat about what voice acting in games means to you.

Reader Jeremy Trusty asked me if I had ever purchased a game because of voice acting. I put that question to you. (I’ll tell you my answer later… keep it to yourself for now, Jeremy.)

We also want to know how voice acting impacts your play experience. Could you live without Hollywood-caliber voicing? If so, would you prefer subtitles or non-professional performances?

Beyond voice acting, how important are likenesses to your experience. Do you enjoy seeing the faces of actors you know, like Kevin Spacey in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare or Shawn Ashmore in Quantum Break?

So, let’s take a break from the political side of the voice acting debate and talk about the craft instead. We’re eager for your feedback.
