Where Is Our Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition Review?

by Matt Miller on Aug 23, 2015 at 09:01 PM

In advance of next year’s planned release of Gears of War 4, the Coalition is releasing a new version of the original Gears of War tomorrow, on August 25. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition completely remasters the visual and audio experience of the game, while simultaneously striving to maintain the gameplay of the original 2006 game. We’ve been playing the new version for a couple of weeks, but are waiting to offer a final verdict.

Why? While we had the opportunity for a brief guided multiplayer session by members of the development team at the Coalition, we’ve yet to experience the game’s multiplayer as it will be experienced by the public. We’ve been told that dedicated servers and skill-based matchmaking should offer a solid online play experience, but we want to wait until we’ve played several hours of the multiplayer after the game has launched before making our own determination.

In the meantime, players who are looking for a comprehensive visual overhaul of the original game should feel confident in their purchase. The campaign is beautiful, and includes levels drawn from the PC version, which have never been available on any Xbox platform. The multiplayer matches we've played feel true to the feel of the original albeit game, albeit with several new maps not present in that original version.

Stay tuned for our full review later this week.
