Street Fighter V Beta Postponed Due To Extensive Server Problems

by Mike Futter on Jul 27, 2015 at 09:49 AM

Capcom is taking Street Fighter V back to the drawing board after three days of problematic server performance. The beta, which was scheduled to last for five days, has ended early after significant problems.

“After three days of testing, while we were making progress and collecting valuable data, we felt the majority of players were not having a good experience, and the best course of action would be to take the servers offline for extended maintenance,” Capcom writes. “We will be postponing our first beta phase until we believe the experience is going to be a positive one for players.”

Capcom is planning three beta periods, but will not count this false start against that number. Prior to cancelation, the beta was limited to the Americas for the first two days to hedge against server load. Those that participated in the beta test (and those in Europe and Australia that were locked out) will be receiving an as yet unnamed in-game incentive.

“The whole team here is very disappointed that we were unable to deliver a proper beta experience this time,” Capcom writes. “Thank you so much for your continued support, and we promise that we will have a better experience for you with the future betas.”

We’ll report when more information is available about the next beta period.

Our Take
Given that betas are intended to expose just this sort of problem, this isn’t a complete failure. However, tying beta access to pre-orders creates an expectation of functionality for which Capcom is now apologizing for failing to meet. I’m all for true beta tests, but creating a perception of value beyond aiding the final experience seems counterintuitive to the intent of such events.
