[Update] All Of Street Fighter V's Post-Launch Updates And Characters Will Be Earnable In Game For Free

by Kyle Hilliard on Jul 19, 2015 at 06:40 AM

Update: Capcom has offered a few more details about its plans for Street Fighter V's long-term support – which includes the ability to unlock DLC characters by playing the game.

You can check out the full update on Capcom's Unity blog. Some important quotes from Capcom's blog post include, "Long gone are the days of forced Super and Ultra upgrades!" Street Fighter V's disc is the only version of the game you will ever need to buy and all balancing updates will be free.

Street Fighter V will launch with a core roster of 16 playable characters, with 4 of them being brand new fighters to the Street Fighter universe. Post-launch, we will be adding new characters to the roster on a continuous basis, which will provide new content for players to enjoy. Again, every post-launch character released will be earnable for free through gameplay!

The idea, according to Capcom, is to avoid infrequent large bundle updates that split apart the fan base as some people choose to update and some don't. With Street Fighter V, characters and updates will be distributed evenly throughout the game's lifespan. Capcom writes, "It will ensure that there is always new content to look forward to in the short term, and it prevents the competitive environment from ever becoming stale."

The system that will be implemented is one familiar with anyone who has experienced a free-to-play model. There will be two types of currency. Fight Money can be earned by playing the game and can be used to purchase content. Zenny will be the premium currency that players can purchase using real money to buy content.

Original story:

During EVO 2015, which is happening through this weekend, Capcom detailed a number of exciting details about Street Fighter V covering how its long term support will be free.

You can check out the biggest details below according to a presentation from Capcom.

  • The initial disc is the only disc you will need to own.
  • All balance and system adjustments will be available for free.
  • All post-launch gameplay related content will be earnable by playing the game.
  • Street Fighter V will be the first iteration in the franchise where it is possible for dedicated players to earn all gameplay related content for free, by playing the game.

It's fair to assume, "post-launch gameplay related content," means DLC characters, and you will be able to unlock all of them without necessarily having to buy them.

Capcom has confirmed to us the veracity of the bullet points details above, and says it will post more details on its blog later today. For more on Street Fighter V, head here for our hands-on preview with the game from E3.

Our Take
This is big news for Street Fighter. The last bullet-point statement, "Street Fighter V will be the first iteration in the franchise where it is possible for dedicated players to earn all gameplay related content for free, by playing the game," makes me raise a bit of an eyebrow, because it seems like you could say that of Street Fighter II for Super Nintendo, for example, or the Street Fighter: The Movie game, but Capcom may be referring to the way each Street Fighter has received multiple releases before the era of DLC add-ons. Regardless, this is good news for Street Fighter fans.
