Whispers Of Oblivion Is Playable Right Now If You Pre-Ordered StarCraft II: Legacy Of The Void

by Alissa McAloon on Jul 15, 2015 at 10:24 AM

During E3 we learned that the StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void prologue, Whispers of Oblivion, would be released early for fans that pre-ordered the upcoming Legacy of the Void expansion. As of right now, early access to a free set of missions has been opened up.

The standalone, three mission-long prologue follows the dark Templar Zeratul and seeks to bridge some of the plot gaps between Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void. Those that pre-ordered the upcoming Legacy of the Void expansion should now have access to the Whispers of Oblivion beta test. Otherwise, the prologue will release as a free standalone mission set at some point before Legacy of the Void’s official release.

If all this StarCraft talk has you in the mood to dive into some older expansions, you’ll be happy to know that the previous StarCraft II expansion Heart of the Swarm will no longer require the original StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty game to run. Both this, and the upcoming Legacy of the Void expansion, are playable as standalone titles.

The long-awaited StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void expansion pack is still expected to release around Winter 2015 or early 2016 for both PC and Mac.

Our Take:
Bundling early access to a free content pack with Legacy of the Void pre-orders seems like a good way to ease fans through the wait. Also, making Heart of the Swarm run as a standalone game will no doubt make many players happy. I’m glad I won’t have to dust off my StarCraft II disc in order to catch up on Heart of the Swarm before the new expansion drops.
