Reader Discussion: Do You Think Season Passes Offer A Good Value?

by Mike Futter on Jul 14, 2015 at 12:32 PM

To understand the season pass phenomenon, we must first discuss a basic principle of finance called “time value of money.” Essentially, it means that money in my pocket now is worth more than cash in hand later. The idea is that the sooner you have a customer’s money, the sooner you can start earning interest on it.

With that in mind, it's not difficult to see why publishers have flocked to the practice. The concept of the season pass is to maximize revenue, both by way of capitalizing on the excitement of a new release and getting that cash earlier. Purchases are incentivized by bundle discounts and, more recently, in-game items that are only available (or provided early) via the season pass.

Now, with the mechanics of why season passes exist out of the way, we’d like to ask if there are any with which you’ve been satisfied. If so, what about that particular group of offerings made it compelling for you?

Conversely, are there any poor DLC rollouts that have colored your perspective on season passes? Have any been so bad they’ve changed your feelings about the core game?

What kinds of things convince you to buy into a season pass? Are there particular types of add-ons that hook you?

Now’s your chance to sound off about the DLC you love and the content that’s frustrated you.
