This Week In Mobile: Fly A Jetpack, Fight Dinosaurs, And Shoot Mutants

by Christian Belland on Jul 03, 2015 at 06:00 AM

This week in mobile has a little bit for everyone. Insomniac Games goes prehistoric while a brave scientist risks life and limb to bring jetpacks to the mainstream. Fans of simple one-touch games will be happy with another selection from BoomBit Games. Finally, anyone looking to kill some time by killing some mutants will be in for a treat with Xenowerk.

Bad Dinos
Developer: Insomniac Games
Platform(s): AndroidiOS
Price: $2.99

What happens when the minds behind Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Sunset Overdrive make a mobile game? The result, apparently, is a dinosaur-themed tower defense game. Bad Dinos is a traditional tower defense title with a few intriguing wrinkles in the experience. With the capture mechanic, you can catch weakened enemy dinosaurs and send them right back at your foes. The maps themselves are also dynamic, so don’t get too comfortable; lava flows and marshes cause the battlefields to shift during gameplay.

Xenowerk
Developer: Pixelbite
Platform(s): Android, iOS
Price: $1.99

Pixelbite returns to the twin-stick (twin-thumb?) shooter with Xenowerk. This game takes the action from Space Marshals while cranking up the speed and body count. Players fight hordes of mutants in over 50 levels of an underground science facility. Pick from a wide array of upgradable weapons and special powers to wipe them out. Xenowerk is an intense little game, perfect for those times when your commute is just a bit too quiet.

Spider Square
Developer: BoomBit Games
Platform(s): Android
Price: Free with in-app purchases

Like Running Circles, Spider Square takes the same minimalist art and simple control scheme and marries them with Flappy Bird-style gameplay. True to the name, players  shoot webs while controlling a spider-like square. Tap the screen to stick a web to the ceiling and swing across the level, all while avoiding obstacles and collecting diamonds. Race your friends in the multiplayer mode to find out once and for all who is the greatest arachnid quadrilateral.

Piloteer
Developer: Fixpoint Productions
Platform(s): iOS
Price: $2.99

In a world where jetpacks are feared and the people who fly them are hated, one scientist sets out to prove everyone wrong. Flying said jetpack isn’t easy, but Piloteer makes failing fun. Accompanied by a hand-drawn art style and an oddly calming atmosphere, players must perform backflips and other death-defying stunts. The learning curve is steep and the gameplay is utterly addictive in the “just one more round” kind of way. Think QWOP with jetpacks.
