Dark Souls Franchise Ships Over 8.5 Million Copies Worldwide

by Matthew Kato on Jul 01, 2015 at 04:58 AM

During a From Software presentation in Japan, the company has announced the great success of the Dark Souls Action/RPG series across the globe.

Adding up the shipment numbers worldwide for Dark Souls (2,828,000), Dark Souls with Artorias of the Abyss (2,765,000), Dark Souls 2 (2,311,000), and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin (600,000), nets the developer more than 8.5 million copies shipped.

The figures do not include From Software's predecessor to the Dark Soul's franchise, Demon's Souls, nor the spiritual successor, Bloodborne.

Dark Souls III was announced during E3, and you check out the game's first trailer here.

Our Take
One interesting thing in those ship numbers is how lopsided it is between Japan and the rest of the world. For instance, the first Dark Souls shipped only 375,000 copies in Japan and 2,453,000 around the globe. The discrepancy continues for the other entries as well. Is the series too difficult for Japanese tastes?
