Microsoft And Mojang Demo Minecraft For HoloLens

by Brian Shea on Jun 15, 2015 at 08:16 AM

Mojang showed off a new version of Minecraft developed specifically for HoloLens during Microsoft's E3 2015 media briefing. The version looks very similar to the game millions have already played, but with Microsoft's HoloLens, players are given new perspectives and abilities.

In addition to being able to view Minecraft on a flat surface, players using HoloLens can say "create world," which builds the world in 3D for the player. The stage demo showed one developer sporting HoloLens and viewing the world in 3D with another developer playing alongside using a Surface tablet. While the experience is the same for the person playing on Surface, the player sporting the HoloLens headset gets a top-down view  that can be scrolled through, rotated, and lifted. The HoloLens player can also say "overview" to change the world and give a different view. The player wearing the HoloLens is also able to use other voice commands, such as "lightning strike" to affect the world in other ways.

There is currently no release window for HoloLens.
