Learn More About Gamer-Focused Mental Health Nonprofit Take This In Upcoming Documentary

by Mike Futter on Jun 05, 2015 at 12:23 PM

Founded in 2013, nonprofit organization Take This has been working to give the gaming community a safe space to talk about mental health issues. Last year, the group made that a physical location at PAX conventions with the AFK room. These quiet areas are designed to give people a chance to take a break from the noise and stress of the show floor before becoming overwhelmed.

Take This has also hosted a number of panels at PAX conventions on different mental health topics. Today, the group announced it is increasing its footprint in collaboration with IGN.

IGN and Take This will be present at San Diego Comic Con, E3, and PAX Prime, and more events. The duo will also be hosting its own events, with more information to come.

As part of the partnership, Take This is also creating a documentary about its work. You can check out the trailer below. The full documentary will be available later this year.

Note: This story originally stated that AFK rooms would be available at San Diego Comic Con and E3, as well as PAX. Take This reached out to let us know that while it will be in attendance, details about what shape that will take are forthcoming.

Our Take
I am a big fan of Take This and the work it does. I hope that the increased profile of the IGN relationship and the documentary make people more comfortable talking about mental health issues. Our culture is often willing to discuss concerns related to physical ailments, but we are reluctant to discuss our mental wellbeing. We shouldn't be ashamed of these issues or needing help with them.
