Latest Trailer For Adam Sandler’s 'Pixels' Is Terrible

by Mike Futter on May 19, 2015 at 08:24 AM

For those just tuning in, Adam Sandler, Josh Gad, Kevin James, and Peter Dinklage are making a movie, Pixels, about space invaders. Also, they are making a movie about Space Invaders… and Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Centipede. Before you get excited though, it’s looking a bit hokey.

The premise is that we shot a time capsule into space in 1982 with elements of our culture, including popular video games. The message was “misinterpreted” and now aliens have descended on Earth in the form of lovable gaming icons from the 80s. Oh, and they all want to kill us.

The second trailer gives us some backstory, introducing the heroes as former champions of a number of arcade games. Apparently, their skills are supposed to translate Last Starfighter-style so they can save us.

The truth is, that this is a comedy and we’ll probably owe our lives to Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage’s mullet. This is a far cry from Sandler's appearance in Reign Over Me alongside Don Cheadle, in which Sony's Shadow of the Colossus was featured prominently as Sandler's metaphor-laden coping mechanism for the loss of his family on September 11, 2001.

Unfortunately, it looks like Pixels is going to only have one lesson for us: Your childhood heroes will betray you and stomp all over everything we once loved about them.

I’m not talking about the game characters.

Pixels will be in theaters on July 24. For more, you can check out the movie’s first trailer.
