Blizzard Takes Steps To Rid World Of Warcraft Of Bots

by Brian Shea on May 13, 2015 at 11:21 AM

Blizzard has posted that it is taking action against bots in World of Warcraft. The post comes in response to a "large number" of accounts that were using third-party automation programs to play the game for them.

"We’re committed to providing an equal and fair playing field for everyone in World of Warcraft, and will continue to take action against those found in violation of our Terms of Use," community manager Josh Allen says in the post. "Cheating of any form will not be tolerated."

Third-party bot programs have been around World of Warcraft for years to farm materials and currency. Though Blizzard has attempted to take action against them in the past, the persistence of these programs has made it difficult to take any permanent actions against the users of bots. Allen encourages players to report any suspected cheaters they encounter. Players can do this by using the right-click report functionality or by emailing suspected hacking or cheating to hacks@blizzard.com.

Our Take
Call me old fashioned, but I remember a time when people actually played their games for themselves. In all seriousness, any time a developer helps rid its online world of cheaters and hackers, it's a win for the community, and Blizzard just took a step toward making a statement on that.
