The Last Of Us: Left Behind Getting Standalone Release This Month

by Mike Futter on May 01, 2015 at 04:39 AM

Sony has announced plans to convert one of 2014’s best DLC releases into a standalone package. The Last of Us: Left Behind will be available as an encapsulated experience beginning later this month.

Left Behind is part-prequel, part fill-in for a period skipped in the main game. It tells the story of Ellie’s relationship with her best friend Riley and how Ellie comes to be so important.

The standalone is priced at $9.99 and will be released on May 12. At that time, the DLC version will also receive a price adjustment to bring it in line.

Once you own the Left Behind standalone, you’ll have some different choices to upgrade to the rest of The Last of Us.

PlayStation 4 Upgrade Options

  • Factions Multiplayer - $9.99
  • Single player and Treacherous Territories Maps (if you also own the standalone multiplayer) - $29.99
  • Single player, multiplayer, Treacherous Territories Maps - $39.99

PlayStation 3 Upgrade Options

  • Factions Multiplayer - $9.99
  • Single player and Treacherous Territories Maps (if you also own the standalone multiplayer) - $19.99
  • Single player, multiplayer, Treacherous Territories Maps - $29.99

Our Take
This essentially repositions Left Behind as an introduction to the game for some new players. While the flashback segments work well for that purpose, the part of the expansion that covers a window glossed over in the main game might feel disjointed and confusing. I’m curious to hear from those that play Left Behind first about their feelings on the narrative arc.
