Tensions Rise In Latest Episode Of Microsoft's Serial-Style Halo: Hunt The Truth Series

by Mike Futter on Apr 27, 2015 at 05:53 AM

With the popularity of Serial and HBO’s The Jinx, Microsoft’s Hunt the Truth in-universe podcast series is perfectly timed. This week brings us the fifth episode, titled “Out of Time.”

Microsoft has a long tradition of commissioning and creating in-universe lore around and beyond the Halo games. Halo 2 brought us the i love bees alternate-reality game. Halo 3 gave us a stunning diorama of a battle between The Master Chief and the Covenant (along with fictional documentary accounts of those who fought along side him).

For those that haven’t been listening weekly, the story follows journalist Ben Giraud as he tugs on the threads of a story about The Master Chief. He begins writing a government-commissioned propaganda piece that evolves into a tangled web of deception and intrigue.

The most current episode brings Giraud to Earth for a face-to-face meeting at the Office of Naval Intelligence. As you’ll hear, things begin to go awry as it becomes clear the government knows the journalist has gone off-script.

You can listen to episode five and catch up on the Hunt the Truth website. Halo 5: Guardians is due out on October 27 for Xbox One.

Our Take
I’m not always a fan of tie-in stories, but this one is well-written and produced to the quality we’ve come to expect from Halo companion tales. The Halo universe is an interesting one, but we rarely get a civilian’s view of life after the war with the Covenant. These long episodes are worth listening to, even if you’re only a casual Halo fan.
