2K Australia Is Shutting Down

by Jeff Cork on Apr 16, 2015 at 05:05 AM

The developer behind games including Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is closing down. According to an official statement from 2K Australia, the high cost of development was a factor.

Game Informer Australia's David Milner reached out to the studio, and received the following statement:

"We can confirm we have taken steps to begin the studio closure process for 2K Australia in order to better manage ongoing development costs while improving the working proximity of our creative teams. We are very grateful for the team’s valuable contributions to numerous 2K projects, and are working with affected staff to explore reassignment opportunities where possible."

The studio was founded in 2000 as Irrational Canberra before getting a name change to 2K Australia in 2007. For a brief period of time it was absorbed into 2K Marin in 2010, but by the end of 2011 it reverted back to the 2k Australia name.

While the studio's name was in constant rotation, they did consistently good work on some of the most beloved series in modern times. As Polygon noted, 2K Australia was instrumental in BioShock Infinite's development. The studio had a full team devoted to that game, and they helped to build out its memorable setting: the floating city of Columbia.

Our Take
News like this is always disappointing to write about; I can only imagine how tough this is for the people and their families that are directly affected by the closure.
