Tomb Raider Reboot Marks 8.5 Million Sales Claiming Franchise Record

by Mike Futter on Apr 06, 2015 at 06:21 AM

Square Enix has announced that the Tomb Raider reboot originally released in 2013 has claimed a third franchise record. The title already sold more on its first day and in its first month than any other game in the series. Now it owns the top sales spot overall, too.

This morning, the publisher shared that 8.5 million copies of the reboot have been sold across all five of the platforms it was released on. The title originally launched in 2013 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. A “definitive edition” arrived on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in early 2014.

The reboot will receive a sequel this holiday on Xbox One. Rise of the Tomb Raider will premiere on Microsoft’s platform. We continue to wait for concrete information about other platforms. For more on that title, check out our coverage hub from the March 2015 issue.

Our Take
Tomb Raider has come a long way since 2013, when Square Enix deemed it a commercial failure. We're most curious to see how Rise of the Tomb Raider fares given its exclusivity.
