Reader Discussion: How Would You Redesign Death In Games?

by Ben Reeves on Mar 31, 2015 at 03:57 PM

We've been dying in games for years, but most of the time that just means you reset back to a previous checkpoint and have to replay the last few moments all over again. Some games have broken out of that mold. Which ones are your favorite?

The sexiest voice on YouTube, Mark Brown, recently posted a video about this subject on his YouTube channel, which got me thinking. While he sort of dismissed the Prince of Persia series, I actually like how the Sands of Time discounted player death as the Prince misremembering his tale. I also love games like Heavy Rain and XCOM that allow you to keep playing even if you die or lose a mission. If you were making a game how might you deal with player death?
