Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition Arrives At Retail This Week For Demo And Purchase

by Mike Futter on Mar 25, 2015 at 10:49 AM

Samsung has announced that you’ll soon be able to purchase its self-contained head-mounted display at retail. If you’ve been curious about trying out one of the recent virtual reality products for the first time, you’ll likely have your chance.

Starting on Friday, March 27, Gear VR (powered by Oculus) will be available at a number of Best Buy locations. The display costs $199, but you’ll need a Samsung Note 4 mobile phone to use it.

Note that the current Gear VR model is designed for developers and enthusiasts. The library isn’t terribly expansive yet, though there are some interesting items.

We’ve been testing one recently, and you can check out a humorous video of my father trying it for the first time. For additional impressions of the Gear VR, check out our coverage from Oculus Connect in September 2014.

Our Take
Even if the Gear VR weren’t for sale at retail, having it available for demonstrations is an enormous step. The only way people are going to become interested in wearing a bulky head-mounted display is if they get to try it and are wowed. This is bigger news than it might seem like on the surface.
