News

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is out today, bringing the popular series to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. If you’ve played either Borderlands 2 or Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on a last-gen console, you might want to hang onto your data.

You’re in luck, as you can import your content within the same console family. That means Xbox 360 saves can be moved to Xbox One. PlayStation 3 and Vita data can be transferred to PlayStation 4.

When you successfully complete the transfer, here’s what will be imported:

  • Character level and all mission progress
  • Badass Points (all of these will transfer, but you’ll get to re-spend them)
  • Backpack inventory
  • Weapon slots
  • Cash and Eridum/Moonstones
  • All unlocked character customizations (heads/skins) (Customizations obtained from Telltale’s Poker Night 2 will be added in a patch following launch)
  • Items stored in the bank in Sanctuary

You don’t get to transfer your Golden Keys, but if you’ve played either Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel, you’ll get some goodies when you sign in for the first time:

Borderlands 2

  • 75 Golden Keys
  • A healthy chunk of Badass Rank
  • Bonus character customizations

The Pre-Sequel

  • 75 Golden Keys
  • A healthy chunk of Badass Rank
  • Bonus unique weapons and character customizations

2K and Gearbox recommend that you move your saves over before you start the games. This will stack the bonus badass rank on top of your existing rank. We’ve had reports of people not having rank transfer over correctly, so be sure you follow the steps in order.

Now, to move your saved data over (again, BEFORE you start a game), follow these steps straight from Gearbox:

  • Ensure all versions of the games are up to date with the latest patch (old-gen and new-gen) and you are connected to PlayStation Network or Xbox Live.
  • From the main menu of the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions of BL2 or BL:TPS, choose the “Cross Save” (PlayStation consoles) or “Cloud Save” (Xbox consoles), then “Upload Save” function.
  • Once the save has been uploaded, choose “Cross Save” or “Cloud Save” then “Download Save” from the main menu of the PS4 / Xbox One Handsome Collection game for which you’re downloading the save.

Only one save file can be moved at a time. This is a one-way transfer for Xbox 360 to Xbox One. On PlayStation systems, you can use the cloud save feature to pick back up on either Vita or PlayStation 3 using your PlayStation 4 data.

Finally, Gearbox is doling out 25 Golden Keys for each title on all platforms. Here are the codes you can use to redeem them:

Our Take
This process might seem complicated, but make sure to follow the steps. Provided you’ve got everything updated on both ends (there’s a day one title update for The Handsome Collection), you should be good to go.
