This Week In Mobile: Slash, Jump, and Swap!

by Justin Mikos on Mar 20, 2015 at 01:20 PM

This week in mobile we have four very different games including a simple platformer, a new arcade-like take on Infinity Blade, and a Puzzle/RPG hybrid. Two of the games this week are free so you can easily try them out.

Chromaticon
Developer: Rlyeh Industry
Platform: iOS
Price: $1.99

Chromaticon is visually exciting as tons of rainbow energy spheres fly towards the core you need to protect in the center of the screen. There are two modes, one where you have shields that absorb the energy spheres on contact and another where you constantly fire laser beams to blast them out of the sky. Both options are controlled by tilt controls. You can vary up the visual experience by choosing a black or white background for the action.

Mr Jump
Developer: 1Button Sarl
Platform: iOS
Price: Free

I tried out Mr Jump and came away impressed by the simple platformer. Mr Jump has a very satisfying arc to his jump and just controls really well so it is easy to make long leaps or small hops. What surprised me the most about Mr Jump were the powerups littering the levels. Collecting a white diamond in midair allows you to jump again, while collecting a rainbow-colored diamond lets you jump indefinitely until you touch the ground. The game has a very simple aesthetic that looks nice in motion. Considering it is free, there is a good amount of content offered in the app's twelve levels.

Stormblades
Developer: Kiloo
Platform: iOS, Android
Price: Free

Stormblades is a more arcade-like take on Infinity Blade. When you confront a big monster you can swipe your sword at any time to deal damage. When a monster attacks you don’t just have to dodge out of the way because they easily telegraph their next move so you can counter them with an opposing sword slash. Surprisingly there aren't a ton of free-to-play elements that drag down the experience since you are free to grind levels again to build up coins to buy all the upgrades.

SwapQuest
Developer: Constantin Graf
Platform: iOS
Price: $2.99

In Swapquest, your character marches along the road and it is up to you create the road they take by swapping out different pieces of land. In this way you can guide your characters to treasure and fight monsters along the way. While the game starts out easy, eventually auto-scroll stages and boss fights ramp up the challenge.
