3DS Dreamcast Theme Is A Treat For Your Ears

by Jeff Cork on Mar 18, 2015 at 05:04 AM

The Sega Dreamcast may not have stuck around as long as Sega may have hoped, but it left a lasting impression on fans. Sega of Japan is releasing a Dreamcast theme for the Nintendo 3DS that reskins the UI and provides a faithful audio recreation of the retro console's startup – warts and all.

As pointed out by Redditor nolaredditor the theme goes a step beyond a simple visual tweak. It adds the sounds of the Dreamcast's startup sequence, including the whir of fans, the chattering and grinding of the console's disc drive, and the long beep of the VMU. I remember wondering if there was something wrong with my system when I first set it up, but I quickly got used to all the noise. This is a great reminder of those days.

We've reached out to Sega to see if this theme will be coming to North America, and we'll update this story if we learn more.
