Notch And Gabe Newell Make Forbes' List Of Richest People On Earth

by Justin Mikos on Mar 05, 2015 at 06:33 AM

Forbes has released their annual list of the richest people on Earth. This year, Bill Gates has reclaimed the #1 spot with a net worth of $79.2 billion. Meanwhile, a few people with greater ties to gaming, such as Notch and Gabe Newell, have also secured spots on the list.

Both Notch and Gabe Newell tied for the 1,415th richest person with their net worth reaching approximately $1.3 billion apiece. Other notable figures on the list include Nexon’s Kim Jung-Ju at 1,054th place with $1.8 billion in net worth and NCSoft’s Kim Taek-Jin at 1,605th place with $1.2 billion in net worth.

This is Notch's first year making the list of billionaires, but it follows Forbe's speculation that he would land of the list after the Microsoft Minecraft buyout. What might someone do with $1.3 billion? We know what Notch did; he recently outbid famous Hollywood celebrities Beyonce and Jay Z for a mansion in LA. Of course, this mansion was quickly recreated in Minecraft.

Our Take
Notch joining the list of billionaires isn't surprising considering the ever growing success and reach of Minecraft together with Microsoft sizable purchase of Mojang and Minecraft. We appreciate Notch's innovative business model and his openness to work with his community to build Minecraft into the juggernaut that it is today. Other gaming figures on the list are notable in that they either own storefronts like Gabe Newell with Steam or own companies that are heavily invested in large-scale, accessible online games like the leaders of NCSoft and Nexon.
