Assassin’s Creed Unity Patch 5 Abandons Companion App, Initiates Requirements

by Mike Futter on Feb 18, 2015 at 06:02 AM

Assassin’s Creed Unity gets a bit more streamlined. The title previously required users to connect with a companion app and the AC Initiates website in order to unlock certain items. That changes today.

“Patch 5” unlocks all of the blue and gold chests connected with progression related to Initiates and the app. The update also fixes problems with the “Find Leon” objective in the Dead Kings DLC.

While Xbox One and PS4 updates are rolling out today, PC players will be getting it later in the week. Those players should see improvements with stability, connectivity, and general performance.

Ubisoft says that Patch 5 should fix a number of random crashes in campaign and cooperative modes. The update also fixes some effects and texture problems and issues related to hacking gears.

Our Take
With regard to fixes, these seem like minor updates that we would expect post-launch. It’s just a shame it took four months to get to this point.

As for unlocking the items related to the app and Initiates, it’s a smart move. Those additional hoops make playing games less enjoyable. I don’t want to navigate among my console, laptop, and phone whenever I sit down to play.
