Square Enix Seeking Developer Pitches For Gex, Fear Effect, And Anachronox

by Matthew Kato on Feb 17, 2015 at 03:32 AM

Square Enix has announced that it is seeking indie developer submissions for game ideas based on old Eidos properties Gex, Fear Effect, and Anachronox as part of its Collective crowdfunding platform.

Unveiled early last year, the program has different phases, including feedback, funding, and development. A game idea first approved by Square Enix must garner enough votes and feedback by the community.

After this, and if Square Enix judges that the team can execute its game idea, it enters Kickstarter/Indiegogo crowdfunding. Survive this and then it's on to development. Square Enix says that devs get 80 percent of net revenue from game sales, distribution from Square Enix, and in instances where it's an original game idea (unlike these properties, obviously) – ownership of the IP.

So far the Collective project has seen numerous game ideas in the feedback phase, and according to the official Collective website one – Black the Fall – get to the funding phase. Black the Fall has met its Kickstarter goal, and is in Steam Early Access.

Our Take
Square Enix says it isn't necessary looking for sequels for these Eidos properties via the program; welcoming seeing these franchises in new genres, etc. Good idea. Who knows, even if a dev doesn't make the next Fear Effect title, perhaps they can make something else of their idea.
