PlayStation Network Sub Accounts Can Now Be Upgraded To Master Accounts

by Matt Helgeson on Feb 12, 2015 at 01:40 PM

Sony will now allow gamers who had PlayStation "sub" accounts upgrade to a full membership after they turn 18.

Sub accounts were a way to allow parents to allow underage gamers to access PlayStation Network while maintaining some control over their activity. Parents would assign the sub account under their "master" account, and could then set parameters like spending limits or regulating access to share functionality and live chat. Previously, a gamer that turned 18 and wanted a full master account would have to re-register for a new PSN account.

Now, after reaching adulthood, users will be able to go through a process to upgrade their sub account to a master account.

Our Take
This is very helpful functionality, as it allows gamers to keep their identity, trophies, and the like while still gaining all the privileges of a master account. Good move, Sony.
