Gearbox Expanding To Start Work On Next Borderlands

by Kyle Hilliard on Jan 25, 2015 at 01:05 PM

Internet rumor lead many to believe Gearbox was preparing to announce Borderlands 3 at PAX South. It didn't, but it is ready to start working on whatever is next for Pandora.

Following a panel titled Borderlands Behind-The-Scenes, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford offered a few tweets regarding what's next for the studio's most popular franchise.

Early last year, Gearbox confirmed it was not working on the next Borderlands saying, "We are not developing that right now. We don't know what that is yet. We can imagine what it must achieve, but we don't know what it is yet." During our coverage of Battleborn, Gearbox's next game, we asked why the studio didn't jump right into the next Borderlands. You can check out the video interview below.

These tweets from Pitchford validate his earlier statements showcasing their commitment to Battleborn, but it is also a sign that Gearbox is ready to start thinking about what's next for Borderlands, and bring in more talent to make it happen.

Our Take
I'm glad to hear Gearbox is taking its time with Borderalnds' next core entry. It seems many studios are eager to annualize its popular franchises, and I am happy to see, despite its success, Gearbox is being careful with Borderlands' next entry.
