John Romero Dissects Doom’s Design While Playing It

by Mike Futter on Jan 23, 2015 at 04:16 AM

Double Fine’s Devs Play series features classic games played by experienced developers. In the most recent episode, John Romero walks Double Fine’s JP LeBreton through the first level of Doom.

During the 15 minute session, Romero explains how id Software created visual variety using horseshoes, the importance of looking outside, and how secrets in id games evolved. Romero and LeBreton also discuss scale and scope of hallways and how subtle angles can impact the player experience.
