Capcom Redacts GameCube Reference From Resident Evil HD

by Tim Turi on Jan 20, 2015 at 03:00 AM

Today Capcom released the remastered HD update of Resident Evil's 2002 GameCube remake (read our review here). While the core gameplay and story from the original 1996 PlayStation Resident Evil remained intact, the GameCube remake added new enemies and features, including a cute nod to its new home on a Nintendo platform. Today, with the release of the HD remake, that last part has changed.

Resident Evil has an optional side mission that tasks players with collecting three MO (magneto-optical) disks to unlock a specific door. For the GameCube remake, Capcom designed the MO disk readers to look like Nintendo's cubical console. Capcom has removed the GameCube lookalike from the HD version releasing today on PC, Sony, and Microsoft platforms.

This is how one of the three MO disk readers appears in the Resident Evil HD remaster.

This is what the two black cubes look like next to one another.

And just for the sake of completeness, here's what the MO disk reader looks like in the original 1996 Resident Evil.

Our Take

Considering this new iteration of the Resident Evil remake isn't arriving on any Nintendo systems it makes sense that Capcom might want to remove a potentially distracting reference. However, I'm going to miss seeing that endearing, boxy little system pop up throughout the Spencer Estate.
