Nintendo Finished 2014 With Strongest Wii U Sales To Date

by Matt Helgeson on Jan 15, 2015 at 01:40 PM

In a press release, Nintendo said that December 2014 represented the best single month of sales for its Wii U console, no doubt driven by Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. While it didn't release specific sales figures, Wii U sales were up 29 percent over the same period in 2013. Wii U software sales were up an impressive 75 percent over last year.

The company also cited healthy 3DS software sales, stating that December 2014 was its biggest month to date for handheld software. Again, Super Smash Bros. was singled out as a strong contributing factor. Other standouts included Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.

Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold 1.7 and 1.3 million units respectively. The company also claimed that its Amiibo figures were selling well.

Our Take
Nintendo has had a rough few years, but it really put together a nice lineup of games across both its major platforms. This quality software obviously helped both hardware and game sales across the board. With a new model 3DS on the horizon, we would expect another strong year for the company in 2015.
