Classic Nintendo Tunes Played On Traditional Japanese Instruments

by Mike Futter on Jan 05, 2015 at 08:45 AM

Music from classic Nintendo games has stood the test of time, but you’ve likely not heard it quite like this. Famikoto is an ensemble from Japan that performs video game music on traditional instruments, recently adapting some of the most recognizable tunes in gaming.

The group has adapted the melodies from Fire Emblem, The Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. The music is performed on the koto (horizontal stringed instrument), syamisen (stringed instrument with a long neck), and syakuhachi (a long bamboo flute).

For more videos of the group, you can visit its website. There, you can also hear selections from its CD of music from Mother (called Earthbound in the west).
