Permadeath Meets Prison Escape In New Far Cry 4 DLC

by Tim Turi on Dec 18, 2014 at 07:15 AM

Flying the coop is no easy task on its own, but Ubisoft is ratcheting up the intensity tenfold. Far Cry 4's new Escape from Durgesh Prison DLC tasks players with breaking out of the big house within a limited amount of time and no extra tries.

The DLC stars Ajay and his co-op partner Hurk as they attempt to escape from Durgesh prison. The duo's weapons have been taken, they've been tortured, and finally incarcerated. The two must flee from the prison and across the land of Kyrat towards their extraction point within a set time.

Ajay and Hurk can enhance their odds of reaching the extraction point by reclaiming their lost weapons, acquired by completing objectives set up by Pagan Min. Whether playing solo or with a co-op buddy, you only have one shot to flee from the region while evading the enemy forces. Dying resets the mission, and the only thing players carry over between attempts is the knowledge and skill earned. Online leaderboards will also allow players to compare their best escape times with their friends.

Escape from Durgesh Prison hits PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC on January 13 for $9.99. Fans who bought the $29.99 season pass are already locked in for the harrowing Durgesh escape. Check out the screenshots in the gallery below.

Permadeath is an cool way to dramatically raise the stakes in any game, and layering on a time limit is guaranteed to turn up the intensity even more. These types of gameplay features are usually reserved for indie games with roguelike influences like The Binding of Isaac and FTL, and I personally think it’s great that a triple-A publisher like Ubisoft is dipping its toes in those waters.
