This Week in Mobile – Plan, Explore, Defend

by Matthew Stolpe on Nov 14, 2014 at 09:30 AM

This week in mobile we’ve got offerings for gamers who are keen on retro sci-fi and old-school games. There are also solid entries in the tried-and-true puzzle game and tower defense departments.

XCOM: Enemy Within
Developer: 2K
Platforms: iOS, Android
Price: $12.99

Unlike its console counterpart, the mobile version of XCOM: Enemy Within is sold as standalone app. There shouldn’t be any surprises here if you’ve played this expansion on consoles. Enemy Within refreshes the beloved strategy game by adding new enemies, soldiers, upgrades, and maps to the mix. The new collectible “meld” resource opens up skill trees for mech and super soldier classes, giving you even more ways to wipe out those little green men. Agents, you’re going to have your hands full with this one.

Framed
Developer: Loveshack Entertainment
Platforms: iOS
Price: $4.99

Framed has made a lot of noise on the convention and festival circuits, and with good reason. The innovative title seamlessly blends its narrative with puzzle-based gameplay. Framed’s noir-styled story plays out in moving comic panels. In each scenario, players need to shift the panels around to change the outcome of the events. Pictures just don’t do this game justice; you’ll have to watch the trailer above for a taste of this title’s unique gameplay.

Space Age: A Cosmic Adventure
Developer: Big Bucket Software
Platforms: iOS
Price: $3.99

Space Age, a veritable love letter to the best of retro sci-fi, is the latest game from the team that brought you The Incident. Set in the far-off future of 1976, players will control a team of explorers as they uncover the mysteries of an alien world. Space Age mixes elements from strategy games and point-and-click adventures. There’s a heavy emphasis on item collecting and exploration, but some alien encounters require thoughtful planning and stealthy maneuvers. You can preview Space Age’s gameplay in its endlessly endearing trailer here.

Endless Doves
Developer: Nitrome
Platforms: iOS, Android
Price: Free

With visuals pulled straight from the classic Game Boy era and a catchy soundtrack, Endless Doves is an endless flier poised to charm the pants off old school gamers. The premise is simple, yet bizarre: you play as a man who flies through whimsical dreamscapes, collecting a trail of doves as he soars. The game’s two-button control scheme plays like a more-forgiving Flappy Bird, but its dynamic obstacle courses are plenty tough to navigate in their own right. If doves aren’t your thing, then fret not. The doves you pick up can be used as in-game currency to buy new birds like pigeons and chickens.

Crystal Siege HD
Developer: FDG Entertainment
Platforms: iOS
Price: $4.99

If you’ve got a craving for a new fantasy game, then look no further than Crystal Siege HD. This app is an RPG/tower defense hybrid; players defend their towers with weapons, spells, and even the environment from hordes of demonic enemies. There are tons of new weapons and armor to pick up along the way, so loot fiends will be plenty busy with this one. Plus, it’s got a vibrant cartoon style to boot.
