Which Skylander Is The Only One To Have A New Figure Every Year?

by Mike Futter on Nov 10, 2014 at 01:57 PM

If you were to blindly guess that Spyro (for whom the first Skylanders game is named) is the answer to the question in the headline, it would be a valiant effort. It would also be wrong.

While every Skylander appears in each subsequent game (figures are all forward compatible), some get new versions alongside new title releases. Of the original 32 characters, 10 appeared as new toys each time for Spyro's Adventure, Giants, and Swap Force. (Note that this does not include the Series 1 re-releases under the Eon's Elite line.)

The only one of those to reach "series 4" status so far is Gill Grunt. The water-based Skylander has evolved over the past few years, eventually taking flight on his water jetpack in his 2012 release and hoisting a hefty anchor in 2013.

This year, he rides on a water dragon. Works for us.

The original Gill Grunt lacks the personality of later versions. There's no smile or bombastic sense of adventure in his Spyro's Adventure release.

In his second year, Gill Grunt softens a bit thanks to his grin.

Anchors Away Gill Grunt shows off the fearless fish with his upgraded harpoon gun.

And here's Gill Grunt as he appears in his fourth and (currently) final version. For more on Skylanders: Trap Team, check out our review. You can also visit our checklist of figures to see which are available now.
