DICE Has Parts Of Battlefield 4 Running On An iPad

by Mike Futter on Nov 06, 2014 at 09:21 AM

It’s no secret that EA’s primary engine, Frostbite 3, is running on iOS. In fact, the Battlefield 4 Commander app runs on it. However, DICE piqued our interest today when it announced that parts of Battlefield 4 are running on iOS right now.

The project is still early and very much a tech demo. Kristoffer Benjaminsson, product owner for mobile at Frostbite, says that Apple’s new Metal graphics API has made it possible to retain the lighting, destructibility, and number of objects on screen.

There’s no guarantee that Battlefield 4 (or subsequent titles) will ever see an iOS release. However, this work could result in other ambitious Frostbite titles arriving on iPad.

Our Take
I’m not sure that I’d ever want to play Battlefield on my iPad, but the idea of complex Frostbite games running on the device is appealing. I’m interested to see where DICE takes this, largely because I enjoy seeing the evolution of tablet gaming as a viable mechanism for deeper experiences.
