Bethesda: ‘We Decided To Cancel’ Prey 2

by Mike Futter on Oct 31, 2014 at 03:24 AM

The long, sad tale of Prey 2 seems to be finally over. Bethesda has confirmed that the game is no longer in development.

Speaking with CNET, Bethesda vice president Pete Hines says the game wasn’t up to the publisher’s quality standards. "It was game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be - we never saw a path to success if we finished it," Hines told the site.

Prey 2, the sequel to a 2006 2K Games Xbox 360 and PC title, was announced in 2011. The title was delayed in 2012 following initial rumors of cancelation. In May 2013, new rumors emerged that development had moved from Human Head to Obsidian and then finally to Dishonored developer Arkane’s Austin location.

At that time, Bethesda didn’t have any news to share. Now, it seems the story comes to a close.

Our Take
When Bethesda first showed Prey 2 years ago, it looked extremely promising. Unfortunately, not every great concept turns into even a middling game. Sometimes you have to let good ideas go.

Thankfully, Hines also told CNET that this doesn’t necessarily mean the Prey franchise is dead for good. The door is being left open, which is really the safest thing for any publisher to say.
