Reader Discussion: What Elements Do You Look For From Different Genres?

by Mike Futter on Oct 14, 2014 at 04:17 AM

As gaming continues to become more diversified, players flock to different genres for a variety of reasons. Visuals, sound, action, story, and more are combined to create the experiences that end up in digital and retail storefronts.

Different genres use those facets in unique combinations. Some lean more heavily on action, while others are focused on the story. And players gravitate to one or more of them for a variety of reasons.

We’re curious about why you drift toward the genres you love. Do you delve into RPGs for the story or the combat systems? Do you play horror games for the atmosphere created by visuals and sounds or the terrifying narratives woven in part with them? Do your shooters need a compelling tale, or are you satisfied with action alone?

Let us know in the comments what your favorite genres are and what keeps you coming back to them.
