New Sony Smartphone Features PlayStation 4 Remote Play

by Matt Helgeson on Oct 09, 2014 at 03:28 PM

On October 23, Sony is releasing its Z3 smartphone, which will allow you to play streaming PS4 games on the go.

The Z3 is part of a new line of Sony mobile devices that will feature PlayStation 4 remote play. To use your Z3 phone as a PlayStation streaming device, you'll need a DualShock 4 controller, PSN account, and have both the console and your phone on the same wi-fi network.

Sony is also releasing an aftermarket accessory called the Game Control Mount which lets you dock your phone on top of a Dual Shock 4 for ease of use. You'll also be able to use the Z3 to watch your friends play games, buy game and items in the PlayStation Store, and use it as a remote control for your PS4.

Our Take
With this streaming functionality, coupled with PlayStation Now, it's clear that Sony is preparing for a world in which games live on every device, not just dedicated game consoles. There's only one downside to this announcement: because you need a DualShock controller, you won't be able to use the waterproof Z3 to play PS4 games underwater.
